a Baby Calf |
|
This spring at Moore Ranch we have had many baby calves. We are going to share a few calves and their lives with you. |
|
Brahma cattle are usually raised in the southern United States where the climate is warmer. They have the ability to withstand heat much better than other cattle. |

Texas Longhorns are actually descendants of the first cattle brought to the New World by the Spanish. They have many characteristics, which enable them to survive in difficult situations. They do well in the warm or cold weather. They can survive on less feed than other cattle, and often eat a lot of plants other cattle won't eat. They are also more pest resistant and have an easier time giving birth. |
Longhorn cattle are raised for rodeo animals because of their horns. The horns are used in roping competition and bulldoging. Longhorns are also colorful and interesting to look at. Because of this, many people like to have them as pets. | |
Yes, This is a cow, an adult female. This is not a bull. Many people, even grown-ups, think that an animal with horns is a male or a bull. This is not true. In the cattle species, even the cows may have horns. Some cattle are polled, which means they have no horns. This is JP Sunshine. She will soon have a calf. She is a light yellow color which cowboys and cattlemen call dun. She is 12 years old. |

When calving season begins on Moore Ranch, it is a fun time watching all the new babies and especially babies of all different colors. When Joe, the cowboy, checks for new calves on his horse, it is like hunting for Easter eggs. He wonders what color calf he will he find today. Will it be all red, red speckled, white with red ears... or will it be black with lots of white speckles on it? |
Joe checks for new baby calves to make sure they are healthy. He wants to make certain the cow has recovered from giving birth and is now taking good care of the calf.
On May 5, Joe saw that JP Sunshine had given birth to a calf. She was much thinner now, and her udder was much fuller. However, she did not have a calf with her. Not to worry, Joe knows JP Sunshine is a very good mama. He is sure she has hidden the calf by laying it in some bushes or tall grass. The cow has a natural instinct to hide the calf from predators such as coyotes and cougars. Although the cowboy searched and searched, he could not find the calf. He could tell that the calf has nursed by observing the cow's udder. Joe knows the calf must be well, so he will ride out and check tomorrow.
